SINGAPORE’S LATEST ATTRACTION – RIVER SAFARI
Singapore’s new $160 million River Safari wildlife park opened last Wednesday during a soft launch. The 12ha park showcases freshwater animals from eight iconic river habitats such as the Mississippi, Amazon and Nile. It is open every day from 9am to 6pm. The park is not yet fully open, with some exhibits still not ready yet but the newspapers reported big crowds coming to the new attraction.
What’s arguably a central feature of the River Safari is the Upper Seletar Reservoir, one of Singapore’s largest. The theme park is built around the catchment area, which provides a magnificent setting and another viewing gallery for wildlife. Migratory birds are a common sight there.
The park is divided into two areas, halved by the Upper Seletar Reservoir. The first area called Rivers of the World contains the 7 “Rivers” – it features mostly sea animals like fish and crocodiles. At the end will be a bridge that will take you to the second area, Wild Amazonia – which features mostly rainforest animals. There is actually heaps more to do in this second area of the park.
The park is designed in such a way that you go through the first half through Rivers of the World, then make the return journey through Wild Amazonia and eventually return to where you started.
Of the park’s 300 animal species, 42 are endangered. Most are under a captive breeding programme, with the hope of adding to their numbers worldwide.
