A recently conducted survey on the most expensive cities to live in reveal that the city state of Singapore is the most expensive city to live in on Earth, followed by the cities of Paris, Oslo, Zurich and Sydney. So, if you are thinking of trying out life in any of these expensive cities, we give you a quick rundown on how much it’ll cost you to have a roof over your head, a meal to warm your tummy and a way to get around the city if you are on a tight budget.

SINGAPORE

A regular one bedroom apartment in the center of Singapore may cost $4000 a month. A one way ticket for local transport $2 and the cost of utilities are double that of most cities. Singapore is heavily reliant on Malaysia for energy and other resources, which is why the cost of city services are higher. Due to the high cost of apartment rents, it is quite common to see a one bedroom apartment inhabited by 4 or more individuals. To save money on transportation, get a monthly pass instead of spending the full fare on one way tickets.

PARIS

An average one bed room apartment outside Paris costs 900 euros a month while those inside the city may go around 1000 – 2000 euros. A 5 mile taxi trip will cost 17 euros. To save on transportation, buy a 65 euros monthly ticket. Eating out should also be avoided if you want to spend less on food and save money for and monthly bills.

OSLO

Living in Oslo on a tight budget may not be easy, especially with a monthly rent of 8000 – 10000 NOK a month for a 1 bedroom apartment. A single meal in a regular restaurant costs around 150 NOK. If you are looking for less expensive apartments, the apartments and houses in the east side of Oslo are cheaper compared to those found in the west side. When looking for a place to stay, visiting the housing office first before going around the neighborhood is sure to save you time and money. If you can’t avoid eating out, go to a regular fast food chain instead of a regular restaurant.

ZURICH

A single bedroom apartment in Zurich costs around 1300 – 2000 FR. A single meal in an ordinary restaurant costs about 25 FR. To cut on your transportation expenses, buy a Zurich Card in the Service Center at Zurich Airport. Also, bringing a sandwich to work or when going to school may also help you save much on meal expenses.

SYDNEY

Moving to Sydney necessitates being able to spend AUD450 – AUD600 a week for a one bedroom apartment. If you add in the other expenses, such as groceries, transportation and other costs, moving to Sydney may not be such a great idea.
